My best recommendation would be to contact a number of colleges to find the best fit for you and your needs (tuition, schedule, career opportunities, etc.). Too often people enroll in the first school they find rather than taking the time to find the best school for them. Taking that time now could save you a lot of time, money and frustration if you choose the wrong school.
This site has some good info on regionally accredited online degrees and some colleges that offer them to help expand your search:
http://www.ecollegefinder.org
I think you can enter your info on there for any colleges you are interested in and they will send you more info for free. Good Luck!
If you are interested in nursing (btw, what state in the U.S.? CA?), I would highly, HIGHLY suggest not do the online route (ala Univ. of Phoenix, Univ. of Oklahoma, or any other proprietary or FOR-Profit schools). Why? Most likely if you ever think about going on to getting your Master’s in Nursing, your credits will not transfer. Another thing, at least here in the Los Angeles region, having a degree from a completely online school has such a bad social stigma attached to it. Now, I know it is unfounded, but… it’s just the way it is :(
Have you ever thought about doing community college Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)? With that at least, you’re not setting yourself up for a dead-end as opposed to getting a Bachelor’s through an online proprietary school. With an ADN, you can go on to a regular University NATIONWIDE–>You can transfer your credits in any state, even WORLDWIDE. So you can go on to say, become a traveling nurse & have a degree that is recognized worldwide (& respected, IMO).
I’m an ICU nurse with a Bachelor’s from UCLA. But I started off first via ADN, then transferred to UCLA & obtained my Bachelor’s in Nursing. Now I’m getting my Master’s at UCLA. I used to be in the Marines as active duty (reserve status now), & am currently talking with a NAVY nursing corps recruiter (I know. Gives me the heebeejeebees thinking about switching to NAVY, but what the hey). The military does recognize nursing degrees from an online school, but they put prospective new recruits through “remediation,” basically a better way of saying they need to standardize their online education they have earned. I know of two coworkers that are currently going through this who have earned their Bachelor’s from Univ. of Phoenix. They had to take upper additional Nursing courses just to satisfy the admittance procedures. It all comes down to this though; How good would it look in my (future) resume? I can tell you right now, with the economy down & competition being HIGH, someone that went to a state school would PROBABLY be considered first than someone with an online degree. It sucks, it’s unfounded, I’m sure that ppl work just as hard getting their online degree as with others who have gone the traditional way, but it’s the cold hard truth. Some nursing managers view online degrees as a “shortcut.” I don’t know why.
However, think long & hard about your future: Do you intend to further your studies & career? Or are you just planning to just work work work & not really care about earning a Master’s &/or PhD? Just be careful & RESEARCH before jumping into anything. &… if you want to combine nursing & criminal justice? There is such a thing as FORENSIC NURSING. That is what my research & setup is all about during my MSN studies ;) Think about it.
A friend of mine recently completed his online degree from Argosy University in Criminal Justice.
Now he is working with a law firm as law enforcement officer. Argosy is an accredited university providing a number of courses.
You can check out the online degrees of your choice from here – http://www.thedegreeexperts.com/online-degree.aspx The website provides an extensive list of all the accredited online degrees.
You can pursue any degree online unless and until it is accredited by an authorized accrediting body, since employers prefer their prospective employees to have a degree from an accredited university.
