Lafayette, LA (PRWEB) April 22, 2008

The demand for online learning opportunities is growing by leaps and bounds as thousands of degree-seeking students flock to Internet-based classrooms and lecture halls. As evidence of this growing trend, the American Educational Guidance Center, a leading provider of information about online degrees, reports seeing remarkable growth in the number of visitors its Web site receives on a monthly basis.

“Two years ago, approximately 500 people a month used our Web site to request information from online colleges,” said Daniel Kane, director of the American Educational Guidance Center. “Now, that number is closer to 5,000 a month.”

Kane attributes the increases to a number of factors in the industry and in workplaces throughout America. Right now, there are record numbers of online degrees being awarded and more and more traditional colleges are becoming involved with online, distance learning programs. Plus, Kane said, more employers are recognizing the legitimacy of Internet-based learning and are offering to reimburse employees for tuition spent at online colleges and universities.

“The Internet is changing the way education is delivered,” said Kane. “The Internet enables students and colleges to connect no matter their schedules or geographic locations.”

Students are turning to online colleges and universities for a number of reasons. Some of the biggest, Kane said, include:

Increased scholarship opportunities – As more major colleges and universities create their own online programs, more scholarships and grants are becoming available to online learners. This is opening the door even wider for students to take advantage of online universities and degree programs.
Increased employer acceptance – Employers are seeing the benefits of online college degree programs in which their employees can improve their skills and knowledge without interrupting their careers. Therefore, more employers are willing not only to recognize degrees that come from online colleges, but also to reimburse employees for their educational expenses.
Flexibility and ease of scheduling – “Students are drawn to online universities and colleges because it is far easier for them to pursue a degree on their own schedule, from any location that offers Internet access than to have to be in a classroom at a specific time. Many of the traditional barriers to education are being eliminated thanks to online learning.
“As online degrees become more popular, American Educational Guidance Center is pleased to be able to offer students free information on degree and financial aid programs which best meet their needs,” said Kane. “The growth of online education is making the dream of earning a college degree a reality for more and more students, and we are proud to be a part of the trend.”

President Obama’s economic bailout plan, labeled the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP), offers extensive relief to school districts and higher education programs throughout the U.S. According to Sheila Danzig, founder of Degree.com, an information hub on accredited online degree programs, it’s critical that the proposed aid for students pursuing college and graduate degrees online be kept in the plan, as interest in online education continues to increase sharply (www.degree.com ).

“Inquiries about distance education degree programs at Degree.com jumped by 50 percent in 2007 and by around the same amount again in 2008,” Danzig notes. “Other sites show a similar jump in interest. In the last quarter of 2008, TheCollegeDegrees.com (www.thecollegedegrees.com) reported a 10 percent increase in students inquiring about distance learning degree programs. Another site, TheDegree.com (www.thedegree.com), reported the highest number of queries in its ten-year history in January 2009, and a similar increase in interest showed up at 4CollegeDegrees.com (www.4collegedegrees.com ). This popularity of online degree education demonstrates how critically important it is that any additional assistance for higher education in a bailout plan include students in online degree universities in the U.S.”

Two important components of the economic relief plan for higher education are an increase in Pell Grant spending and a larger subsidy for banks involved in the Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL) program.

According to New York Times journalist Sam Dillon, President Obama’s plan would provide an additional $ 8 billion in Pell Grant dollars to students in financial need. Furthermore, additional monies would be available to banks that issue guaranteed loans to university students. The proposed $ 150 billion in extra federal education funding would increase the U.S. Department of Education’s current budget by more than 100 percent.

Students enrolled in online degree programs offering Associate Degree or Bachelor Degree programs are currently eligible for Pell Grants to help finance their college education. Additionally, many students who pursue distance learning to earn a college degree depend heavily on student loans to finance their education.

“Because of its convenience, flexibility, and variety of options, distance learning is quickly becoming the top choice for working adults who want to earn a college degree,” says Sheila Danzig. “More than four million people are currently enrolled in online degree programs throughout the United States, a number that continues to grow by double digits each year. TARP funding can provide both lenders and students the critical relief necessary to continue this helpful trend.”
