Question by BUSYWORKER: Should you be ashamed of being enrolled in an online bachelor’s degree program?
Please, no trolling.
I took some classes at local community colleges. I got good grades in these classes. Then I applied to a university that offers the online bachelor’s degree program for those students who have completed at least 60 hours of prerequisite post-secondary course work and maintained a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
I wanted to enroll in this online degree program to earn my bachelor’s degree for two reasons:
1.) I don’t want to give up the time that I can use to search for a job. I’m almost 26, and it’s just hard for me to go to a traditional classroom full time and give up the work. It just does not make my resume look good.
2.) After I finish my bachelor’s degree, I want to apply to a health professional school. It does require many science prerequisites. This is another reason that I like about the online bachelor’s degree program. It allows me to earn my bachelor’s degree while taking 1 or 2 science classes at the local community college. That way, I won’t have too many science prerequisites to worry about after I obtain my bachelor’s degree.
When I go to the community college, some people that I know always ask me if I’m ready to transfer. In an ideal situation, I would like to be honest about my current situation. However, I am afraid to tell the truth. These students are younger than I am. They are all planning to apply to the University of California system. Even though the college that will grant my bachelor’s degree is regionally accredited (trust me, it has a good reputation), many of these younger sutdents have such a bias toward online degree programs. I really don’t know how to answer their questions without being belittled by them.
I don’t want to say that I am not ready to transfer yet because I have spent many years at the local community colleges. That will be just a lie.
However, at the same time, I don’t feel comfortable telling them that I will finish the remaining classes required for my bachelor’s degree online just so I can also have the time to take science prerequisite classes at the local community college.
I really don’t know how to discuss the issue with all these younger students.
I know if I take science classes at the community college, I will walk into some of them. It’s just AWKWARD.
Should I just lie to them and simply tell them that I am not ready to transfer whenever they ask me which university I will be transferring to?
